That phrase has always been a commandment in my family and my Patrinarc repeated it almost everyday.
When he and my mother divorced, he started to lead the overt “womanizer’s” life… The “victory” and pleasure were his intended “end”.
But, one time he got the serious health problem and spent 1 month at hospital. I’m was the one who visited him everyday and took care about him (my sister couldn’t do it, because she was travelling with her friends).
He was very angry, that no one (aside of me) had visited and supported him. He complained, that he is “alone and forgotten”. And he said “I have a lot of people around me when I’m healthy, but I don’t have anyone when I’m ill. No one loves me!!! They all are the treacherous and mean people!”.
And I said to him “The end always justifies the means, dad…”.
He said “What are you talking about??? I’ve never wanted to have the end like this!”.
“But you did everything to have it… All your life’s “justified means”, absolutely predictably, led you to your current “end”. You did everything, consciously or uncosciously, to be alone and forgotten now. Think about it…”.
So, it is another variant to understand the meaning of Narcissstic Truth “The end always justifies the means”. Narcs’ “ends” (disastrous in the most cases) are absolutely logic, predictable and justified by their “means”. It is the Nature of Things and no one can deceive it. Even Narcs.
PS. Actually, Machiavelli said that aphorism in a pretty different way:
“…In the actions of all men, and especially of princes, where there is no court to appeal to, one looks to the end. So let prince win and maintain his state: the means will always be judged honorable, and will be praised by everyone…”
(The Prince, Chapter 18).
Narcs can be just plain mean! How we treat people in life is the meat of life not the outcome. You can be the most successful person on the planet but if you stepped on people, destroyed lives and used people to get that success its worthless and any happiness is fleeting from it bc the heart of that person is empty.

If that is truly your opinion then you have some of the same opinions as your mother…….I have not read too much about your childhood, but this train of thought reminded me of your mother sending you out in the snow and not allowing you back indoors until you had accurately recited some poem or verse……..these words could have come from her lips…….to her in that situation, the end no doubt justified the means……….Diva
