Melania strikes me as someone stuck in a really shitty marriage. She has been bullied by her husband who likely uses their kid as a threat–‘You’ll never see him again if you leave me…’

My ex was an Upper Greater Narcissist (yeah, lucky me …). I have established a complete no contact with him a few years ago. But the years that we spent together had a horrific impact on me. Looking back, I don’t know how I was able to survive – he put me through pure hell. I’m doing better, but still can’t block the pain inside of me.

Agreed. Fuel is an excellent book and is the best place to start to be able to get the most out of HG’s articles. Fuel, Fury, Sitting Target, and Sex and The Narcissist should be a boxed set and advertised as the Empath Educational Starter Series in my view (and seriously-so affordable). Reading those helps everything after fall into place much quicker and easier.

Hmm…so only a small minority of narcissists have the capacity to become self-aware.
HG, do you think this is the same for every personality disorder (only a small minority can accept/understand their condition), or are narcissists in particular generally prone to denial?
I do not have expertise in other disorders. I notice that those with BPD have a lot more people who are aware of their behaviour but this is purely an anecdotal observation and has no statistical weight.

I am revisiting your article (surprise, surprise!).
A few questions that I would love you to answer:
Why would a Greater narcissist choose another narcissist as his IPPS?
Wouldn’t an empath serve his needs better? Wouldn’t the narcissistic IPPS be too focused on themselves?

A Greater may choose another narcissist as IPPS because there would be significant character traits and especially residual benefits in doing so. There will be fuel, but of course, not as effective as an empath, however, the Greater will have an extensive fuel matrix and therefore he is not going to without. In essence he trades optimum fuel provision of an empath for the considerable advantages that are achieved for the second and third of the prime aims. Thus, you may have a Greater who selects another narcissist who is well-connected politically which segues beautifully with the business acumen of the Greater. He also has a stable of IPSSs who he rotates and thus there is no issue with regard to fuel. The Greater may well select a Mid Ranger who of course does not know who she is, but she feeds off the fuel the Greater will provide, fuel from the people she meets because of him and of course the additional benefits he provides (let’s say wealth). There will be turbulence, naturally, but it can and does happen.

No matter how much of a Machiavellian, a schemer and an intelligent planner a UGN is (presumably other narcs too), everybody knows with 100% certainty that his ‘unerring’ sense of pray never seems to lead him to that magnificent single source of supertaker to fuel him for a lifetime satisfactorily, with zero letdowns and zero need to look further.

I think my own father is off the charts. Upper greater hits it, but misses much of the nuance. He has a lot of control and scares the hell out of me too.
