HG, I recently heard the term “covert narcissist”. I haven’t heard you go into much detail about this manipulation.

After I experienced my first narcissistic relationship and learned about NPD (I had not yet come across your work), I dove deep into reading about this mental illness, reviewed my own relationship, moment by moment, remembering the things that gave me pause or that I thought were odd, in the beginning. Put together my own list of red flags to look out for.

I immediately met Narc #2 straight after the first. He was shy and modest. He didn’t talk about himself. I met him on a dating site and his profile was nothing like you described as early warning signs. I described him to friends as a bit odd, but that he was so interesting and I was curious about him, drawn to him. I would have described him as quietly present. I would have bet on my son’s life that he wasn’t seeing anyone else, despite the fact that he didn’t have very much time for me. In retrospect, that is the only clear red flag I can pinpoint. The fact that he showed keen interest, yet didn’t give me enough of him. (clearly, after reading your work, I was not in the midst of a golden period as there was already an IPPS). I was being tested. He was deciding where I would fit into the fuel matrix.

Needless to say, Im not dating at all right now and I will not ever use dating sites again, but, when I do finally come out of hiding, I don’t feel confident that I will be able to unveil the narcissist. Does this bulletin address this type of narcissist?

I do not use the term covert narcissist because it is unhelpful. Covert behaviours appear with both Mid Range and Greater Narcissists, so the term covert narcissist is not useful. The bulletin addresses all narcissists, including those which use overt and/or covert behaviours.
