Chaper 8…It’s interesting watching the dynamics from a narcissism angle. Catherine is a midranger victim narcissist. The way she laid the guilt trip on Edgar when he went to leave. She is a hypocrite and lives two lives one with Heathcliff and one around the Lintons. Heathcliff has a good heart, but is very damaged from his abusive treatment from Hindley. He is living a life on the outskirts of a world he was brought up in but never was fully a part of. He loves Catherine, but she can never love him. Her narcissism and ego are too great and she secretly despises what he is. He is a servant to her only to be inferior and pitied. Hindley is falling apart and Heathcliff seems to enjoy this given the way he has segregated him and treated him miserably. I predict Catherine will triangulate Edgar and Heathcliff in true narc fashion.
Key phrase: “to adopt a double character without exactly intending to deceive any one”.
If Catherine were a deliberate hypocrite, like Becky Sharp or Scarlett O’Hara, she’d be in better shape.
Chapter 7…It’s nice to see Nelly take Heathcliff under her wing and change her attitude towards him. It’s sad to see how abusive Hindley is towards Heathcliff and I don’t blame him for wanting revenge. He’s been treated horribly! Hindley is evil. The applesauce was funny 😆 Catherine I’ve not figured out yet. I think she’s trying to act the part of her social status, but still is that girl from weeks ago that enjoyed getting into mischief and just being free of any expectaions to be a certain way. That is the Catherine Heathcliff misses. The true Catherine not the fake one.
Chapter 6…It’s so sad how Heathcliff is constantly rejected and judged as inferior based on his past. I can’t imagine the emotional pain he would feel never truely belonging and feeling like he was nothing. Now that Mr. Earnshaw has passed on Hindley has taken away any chance he has of an education or bettering himself. What’s really diaturbing is how the Lintons cast him out yet embraced Catherine. There is always that distinction and judgment upon him. He is on the outside looking into a world he will never truely belong to. Now his only constant allie Catherine he can no longer talk to. Hindley has turned into a mean tyrannt in his revenge.
Finished chapter 5…I can start to see the bond between Catherine and Heathcliff takes on a unique form. They mention religion in this chapter in regards to how they console each other after Mr Earnshaw’s passing. It will be interesting to watch how their bond grows and the form it takes on. I suspect it may be a narcissistic dynamic. If i renember Catherine could be manipulative. There’s a spiritual feel to this story that reaches beyond death, which was mentioned with the appearance of Catherine’s spirit. I am curious why Nelly didn’t accept Heathcliff. Possibly because she witnessed Mr. Earnshaw’s favortism of him over Hindley. The fact he sent him away to school is very heartless for a parent to do. He more or less didn’t want the friction between the boys, which HE created.
Very interesting dynamics between the characters! Lockwood seems very nosey lol I found it sad how Hindley’s father loved Heathcliff more than him. I do wonder if the pain of losing a child at birth deeply affected him and he replaced that child with Heathcliff. It seems a wonderful thing to have done for a homeless child, but he created damage to his own son by turning Heathcliff into his golden child. Heathcliff started off just wanting acceptance and tried to please Hindley, but also became vindictive and manipulative knowing he was favored. I can only imagine the bad blood between these two characters. I can sympathize with both Heathcliff and Hindley. The late master i haven’t figured out yet. Possibly a narcissist. He seems to triangulate between the two characters.
