Five Calls To Isolate You

Julian is married to Elise. He decides that certain calls need to be made. He wishes to attack the pillars of her support network in order to tighten his control over his intimate partner primary source.

Call One: The Sister, Margaret

The morning sun filtered through the heavy drapes of Julian’s study, casting a golden glow on the mahogany desk where his phone rested. He dialled Margaret, Elise’s older sister, with a practised air of concern. His voice, smooth yet laced with a subtle venom, carried the weight of feigned sincerity.

“Margaret, it’s Julian,” he began, his tone measured. “I hope I’m not interrupting. I’m calling because I’m deeply worried about Elise. She’s been… distant, and I suspect it’s because of some troubling influences in her life.”

Margaret, ever protective, responded with cautious warmth. “What do you mean, Julian? Is she alright?”

Julian sighed dramatically, a sound crafted to elicit sympathy. “It’s delicate, Margaret. I’ve noticed she’s been spending a lot of time with that friend of hers, Clara. I hate to say it, but Clara’s behavior has been… questionable. Elise mentioned some financial troubles Clara’s been hiding—debts, I believe, and possibly some unsavory dealings to cover them. I worry she’s dragging Elise into her mess.”

The lie was deftly woven, exploiting Margaret’s natural inclination to shield her younger sister. Clara, in truth, was a steadfast friend whose only fault was her unwavering loyalty to Elise. Julian’s accusation, however, painted her as a reckless opportunist, a parasite leeching off Elise’s generosity. Margaret’s tone shifted, tinged with suspicion, as she promised to “look into it.” Julian ended the call with a satisfied smirk, knowing the seed of doubt had been planted.

Call Two: The Best Friend, Clara

No sooner had he hung up than Julian dialed Clara herself, his demeanor shifting from concerned confidant to righteous indignation. Clara, unaware of the earlier call to Margaret, answered with her usual cheer, only to be met with Julian’s calculated onslaught.

“Clara, we need to talk,” he said, his voice sharp, as if restraining a tide of anger. “I’ve been patient, but I can’t ignore what’s happening. Elise is heartbroken over your recent behavior. She told me about the way you’ve been manipulating her, using her kindness to fund your… lifestyle.”

Clara’s confusion was palpable, her voice faltering. “Julian, what are you talking about? I’d never do that to Elise!”

“Oh, come now,” Julian interjected, his tone dripping with condescension. “She’s too kind to confront you directly, but she’s told me everything—how you’ve been borrowing money without any intention of paying it back, how you’ve been spreading rumors about her to mutual friends. It’s toxic, Clara, and it’s hurting her.”

The accusations were baseless, a tapestry of lies spun from Julian’s imagination. Clara, a woman of integrity who had supported Elise through countless challenges, was now cast as a deceitful opportunist. Julian’s words were chosen to prey on Clara’s loyalty, making her question her own actions and fear for her friendship with Elise. As Clara stammered a defence, Julian cut her off, feigning exasperation. “I just thought you should know how she feels. Maybe you should give her some space.” He hung up, leaving Clara reeling, her trust in Elise shaken.

Call Three: The Father, Robert

Julian’s next target was Robert, Elise’s father, a man whose stoic demeanor masked a deep devotion to his daughter. Julian adopted a tone of grave respect, as if addressing a patriarch whose wisdom he revered. The call began with pleasantries, a veneer of civility that quickly gave way to Julian’s true intent.

“Robert, I hate to bring this up, but I feel it’s my duty as Elise’s partner,” Julian said, his voice low and somber. “I’ve noticed some concerning patterns in her relationship with her cousin, Daniel. She’s confided in me about his… instability. Apparently, he’s been pressuring her for financial help, claiming it’s for his business, but she suspects he’s using it for less savory purposes—perhaps even substance abuse.”

Robert’s silence on the other end was heavy, the kind that signaled a father’s protective instincts kicking in. Daniel, a hardworking entrepreneur and one of Elise’s closest confidants, was anything but unstable. Yet Julian’s narrative painted him as a reckless addict, a danger to Elise’s well-being. The accusation sought to exploit Robert’s paternal fears while sowing discord within the family. “I’ll have a word with Daniel,” Robert finally said, his voice tight. Julian nodded to himself, knowing the rift he had created would ripple outward.

Call Four: The Colleague, Sarah

With the family sufficiently destabilized, Julian turned his attention to Elise’s professional circle, dialing Sarah, a colleague and friend who had always admired Elise’s work ethic. His approach this time was one of professional concern, laced with a hint of moral superiority.

“Sarah, it’s Julian,” he began, his tone clipped and businesslike. “I’m calling because I’ve noticed Elise struggling at work, and I think it’s because of the pressure she’s under from certain people in her circle. Specifically, I’m worried about her friend Michael. She’s mentioned he’s been overly involved in her projects, almost to the point of sabotage.”

Sarah, caught off guard, hesitated. “Michael? He’s always been supportive of Elise. What do you mean by sabotage?”

Julian leaned into the ambiguity, his voice dropping conspiratorially. “It’s subtle, Sarah. Elise didn’t want to make a fuss, but she’s noticed Michael taking credit for her ideas, undermining her in meetings. She’s too kind to confront him, but it’s affecting her confidence. I thought you, as her colleague, should know.”

Michael, a mentor figure to Elise, had never done anything but champion her success. Yet Julian’s accusations were crafted to exploit workplace dynamics, casting Michael as an envious rival. Sarah’s response was cautious but tinged with doubt, promising to “keep an eye out.” Julian ended the call with a sense of triumph, knowing he had planted a seed that could erode Elise’s professional support network.

Call Five: The Childhood Friend, Emily

The final call of the morning was to Emily, Elise’s childhood friend, whose bond with her stretched back decades. Julian adopted a tone of reluctant candour, as if sharing a painful truth against his better judgment.

“Emily, I’m glad I caught you,” he said, his voice soft but edged with urgency. “I need to talk to you about Elise. She’s been struggling, and I think it’s because of the strain in her relationships. Specifically, she’s mentioned how your… expectations have been weighing on her. She feels you’re too demanding, always needing her attention without giving much in return.”

Emily’s shock was audible, her voice trembling. “Julian, that’s not true. Elise and I have always been there for each other. Why would she say that?”

Julian sighed, the sound heavy with feigned empathy. “She’s too kind to tell you directly, Emily. She loves you, but she’s overwhelmed. I just thought you deserved to know so you could give her some space to heal.”

The lie targeted the deep trust between Elise and Emily. Emily, who had been a pillar of support through Elise’s darkest moments, was now cast as a clingy burden. Julian’s words were designed to make Emily doubt her place in Elise’s life, potentially driving a wedge between them. As Emily promised to “think about” her approach, Julian hung up, his campaign nearing completion.

Julian’s actions were not born of mere spite but of a deeper, more insidious need: to isolate Elise, rendering her dependent on him alone ro secure his need for control and admiration, and a key method of doing so is to undermine their partner’s support systems. Julian’s calls were a textbook display of this behavior, each one  tailored to exploit the recipient’s vulnerabilities—Margaret’s protectiveness, Clara’s loyalty, Robert’s paternal instincts, Sarah’s professional integrity, and Emily’s emotional bond with Elise.

By spreading lies about Elise’s loved ones, Julian sought to erode her trust in them, creating a vacuum that only he could fill. His accusations were not random but  chosen to align with plausible fears: financial instability, betrayal, professional sabotage, emotional manipulation. Each call was a thread in a tapestry of deceit, designed to isolate Elise while reinforcing Julian’s image as her sole protector and confidant.

The Aftermath

As the day wore on, the effects of Julian’s campaign began to manifest. Margaret called Elise, questioning her association with Clara. Clara, shaken by Julian’s accusations, sent Elise a hesitant text, seeking clarification. Robert confronted Daniel, straining their familial bond. Sarah began observing Michael with newfound suspicion, and Emily, heartbroken, pulled back from Elise, unsure of her place in her friend’s life.

Elise, unaware of the orchestrated nature of these conflicts, found herself fielding questions and concerns from all sides. The dissonance was disorienting, her once-solid support network fraying at the edges. Julian, ever the attentive partner, was there to comfort her, his words dripping with false empathy. “I don’t know why everyone’s acting this way,” he’d say, his arm around her shoulders. “You’ve got me, though. I’ll always be here for you. It just goes to show how you cannot rely on some people, but you can always rely on me.”

By targeting Elise’s loved ones, Julian not only isolated her but also reinforced his own narrative as the sole arbiter of truth in her life.

Moreover, his choice of telephone calls as a medium was deliberate. The intimacy of a phone call allowed him to modulate his tone, feign sincerity, and tailor his lies to each recipient’s emotional triggers. Unlike written communication, which could be scrutinised or shared, a phone call was ephemeral, leaving no tangible evidence of his manipulation. This  choice underscores his cunning and his ability to exploit human connection for nefarious ends.

Five calls, yet where those calls are targeted at the pillars of support for an individual, those pillars can soon come crashing down and the support network with them, leaving the intimate partner primary source victim exposed and reliant on the narcissist. Just as the narcissist requires it to be.

Oh, I hadn’t seen this text before. Excellent. It illustrates SO WELL what’s going on behind our backs.

My sister is currently going through a divorce. Basically, everyone around her, including our own mother, believed she had serious mental health issues. And this doubt still persists, despite excellent reviews from psychologists, mediators, psychiatrists, a probation officer, social services, and other services my brother-in-law engaged. The basis for these claims was her concern for sick, homeless animals. 😀 The divorce proceedings have been going on for over a year now, and – with the division of assets – they will continue for years to come, and they have four children together. But step by step, relentlessly, my sister is moving forward. So much dirt has surfaced that nothing can be salvaged. A three-volume book could be written on the intricacies of this case.

In my work, the actions described in this text, are the norm. I push forward, without paying much attention to it. I do my job.
    * Sometimes, I exploit these invisible circles, reciprocally, sending my messages back the same way – indirectly. Psyt, ugly Joa 🙂 But I usually don’t feel like getting involved. I’d rather work.

      Joa,
I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s divorce. Do you think her husband is a narcissist?

How’s your mom doing? The last I remember, there were upcoming nuptials. Did your mom end marrying him? I think I recall you weren’t sure about him. But I can’t remember if you said he was a narcissist.

I’m glad to hear your daughter is doing well!

You’ve been missed, Joa! I always loved reading your comments!
