I’m back again to give very enthusiastic thumbs up to this package. When I first looked for “Why am I abused?” answers it was mainly due to my work situations. I kept encountering assholes that tried to control me. I was far too tolerant for years. I tend to marry my work. I didn’t want to sacrifice my connections with clients/colleagues and all of my hard work. It was an emotional me that didn’t want to let go even though I was being put thru hell. 9 months of listening to HG had me GOSOing recently when a narcissist CEO (of 53 salons 🙄 woopi!) messed with me. I had taken a job in Aug 21 to bring back a dying skin care salon. Managers for my district were thrilled that it was happening in such a short time. It took all of 2 minutes to know that I was out upon meeting the narcissist CEO in person. I didn’t hesitate to grab my stuff and run. Within 2 weeks I found a higher paying job and this time I’m going with a massive corporation. HR is a big thing for the company. I don’t have to kill myself or marry my work now. Just show up, do my tasks and leave happy.

Has anyone watched the series?
I think it’s been pointed out before that surgeons – possibly neurosurgeons being at the very top of that list – may often be narcissists simply because of the work they do. I imagine you’d need to have a natural self-belief in the circumstances, too. And while Christopher Dunstch had plenty of the second, he lacked any real ability in terms of his skills according to the series.
What an unbelievable series of devastating events that allowed him to get away with his incompetence. And no one seemed able to stop him. In spite of his atrocious results.
How would you handle that kind of narcissist at work?
There is a documentary to compliment the dramatization, and the issue of narcissism is raised by another YouTube commenter (Dr. Ramani) who I was surprised to see appear. She has all kinds of disclaimers on her videos now in terms of how they can be used (or rather cannot be used) which I noticed when I came across one as YouTube fed it to me. But, it was interesting to see how narcissism was highlighted as part of this series, and as an explanation for the doctor’s grandiose thinking, his entitled behaviour, his lack of remorse, etc. It really is an eye opener and another very moving real life example of how a narcissist can operate within a more professional setting and affect not just their colleagues, but clients as well.
People who worked with him, who saw the risks he was taking as he operated and tried to redirect him, were prevented at every turn by him, and further down the road by those above him, who it seems feared for their own positions both legally and financially.
I don’t know what the answer would be to a Dr. Dunstch, but even with insight maybe some narcissists are too powerful to deal with effectively in the workplace until the damage is already done. That certainly seemed to be the case here.
