Yesterday, I learned of John Asher Farrell Villarreal who murdered a woman and seriously injured a man on Christmas Eve in 2014 when the couple tried to help the then 22 year old by giving him a ride when they saw him hitchhiking.

I learned of this case when I listened to a YouTube video with the title ‘Narcissistic Killer’s Interrogation Makes Detective Cringe.’ It’s a 25-minute video that shows Villarreal confessing to the crime with a long explanation while two policemen mainly sit back and take notes.

While listening to the video, I thought to myself that Villarreal did not have the hallmark manipulative traits of a full-blown narcissist. He blatantly and matter-of-factly told the policemen exactly what he had done. He did not seem to need control and the police were not giving him much fuel. He was open and honest about his mistakes, his inexperience, and his feelings of guilt even though he also coldly explained how he had considered killing other people before he was caught.

Villarreal did not appear to be a psychopath either. He confessed to the crime and gave the police all the details without them needing to ask questions. He said he didn’t fear anyone except God and that God would punish him for his actions. He confessed after just one night of being detained in a cell. As explained in the video, the police left him alone overnight to stew over his arrest and his capture. According to the police, this practice makes some people ruminate over their predicament and decide to confess.

He shot two strangers in the back of the head in cold blood because he wanted to steal their car after they tried to help him by giving him a ride. He decided to hitchhike in order to steal the car from whomever would stop. His attempt to steal another car earlier by hotwiring it did not work because he didn’t know how to do it.

He had decided to steal a car because he was on a mission to ‘rescue’ his online girlfriend who had told him she was being abused by her stepfather. The girlfriend was still a minor at that point but would have turned 18 in less than a month’s time enabling her to leave home of her own volition.

Villarreal is now serving a life sentence.

According to the outcome of Villarreal’s trial, he was found to be autistic. The court was also told that he had PTSD from severe childhood trauma after he saw his father beat his mother to the point where he nearly killed her.

To my mind he also has very strong narcissistic traits but does not have the obvious need for the prime aims. Neither does he have the outright cold callous traits of a psychopath.

To listen to him talk during the confession, you could see how an unsuspecting stranger would think he was an awkward young man lacking in social skills but with delusions of grandeur. It was apparent during his confession that he also seemed to be in a fantasy world of his own making even though he was realistic and analytical as well.

Villarreal had a stash of guns and thought himself a gun expert.

It’s an interesting case because it shows that personalities can be complex. On paper, an autistic person with narcissistic traits who lacks social skills is not ordinarily described as a potential cold-blooded murderer.

It makes me think that the categories of ‘normal’ and ‘narcissistic’ are not simply homogenous or benign groups. Individuals within these groups can be capable of psychopathic actions. These groups can also include a wide range of co-existing personality traits (or mental health conditions) that can be described as ‘neurodivergent’ for want of a better description.

The couple who stopped to help Villarreal on Christmas Eve paid a very, very high price. The woman was killed and the man survived but suffers from life-changing injuries including brain damage and paralysis.
