To the Top!

It takes something special to be number one. The route to the top of the treeΒ is littered with those who did not have what it takes to reach the top. Some lacked the focus to reach that achievement and instead became distracted by those false prophets of Love, Friendship and Family. Others fell victim to other ambitious aspirants who shoved them aside and tramped them into the dirt or thrust them from the mountain side to plummet to the depths below. Look around you at the peaks of achievement, of gold medal wearing Olympians, captains of industry, best-selling authors, directors festooned with awards, multi-platinum disc wielding musicians. All of them straddle the peak of their particular calling. What do you see? What do they have in common? The majority of them belong to my kind and me.
Not convinced? Then consider this. When you know that the prize belongs to you, you will stop at nothing to achieve it. This drives you harder, faster and longer. You rise in the cold and dark and you slog away at the road until your lungs burn and your muscles scream in protest. You remain in the studio until that catchy hook is perfected. You will sit staring at the screen, your neck and back knotted until the correct sentence is typed out. Our standards are high. Higher than those around us and this leads to excellence. Blessed with the knowledge that it will be yours, we are best equipped to deal with the rejections from those incompetent buffoons who somehow managed to place themselves in a position to award publishing or record contracts, or who approve a new collection of art to be exhibited or green light that superlative film for production.
We are not concerned by hurting feelings in our quest to the top. We are not weighed down by a conscience, worried about jettisoning that well-meaning but ultimately useless friend from the team. Who else commands such majesty than us? We are blessed in the art of persuasion and what might seem insurmountable to others is readily conquered by us. Our haughty dismissals of the sub-standard and ability to always move forward are the key components needed to become number one. We are equipped to succeed. That is why my kind and me can be found entertaining and leading the world for without our skill sets, one would never embrace such success. Yes, it may offend your sensibilities to consider that people like us hold such positions of authority and magnificence but I know you are the type of person who likes to make sense of situations. Have not all the attributes that I have listed in order to drive oneself to the pinnacle of professions and careers been found in my kind and me. True, they may vary in breadth and intensity but they are there. It would be good of you if you might congratulate us for once.

This is totally accurrate. The drive for power the perfectionism and the lack of himdering feelings make the perfect combination to take Ns to the top. Make it to the best positions in their jobs and be on the spotlight. I think always the top person will be a N, or at least in 90% percent of the time. They are powerfully driven by their ego, Which seem somehow to guide them along the best and quickest path to the top.
Charm and good networking playing also a big role in it and the fact that they can cast aside any person interferring with the objectives.
Wow. That is the formula to make it to the top, I can happily stay im the middle πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ.

HG what I have noticed is that some Ns, (the ones that were not driven mainly by having power over the other ones) but just being the best of the best, being just better than the other ones, those ones, with the age and the years stop caring about being the best and raising and raising and want to settle down to a more peaceful life rather than that competition to the top and just enjoy what they made. I have noticed alot this. Its for me curious… Do you have insights?
Great article!!! I loved specially the part of staying hooked until its perfect. When I see this im the office its for me a signal of N traits. I never doubted about it and confirm it now. Have a nice day ⛽️.

Thanks Nikita. I haven’t myself witnessed anyone who has always striven to be the best then retiring gracefully. They may no longer be able to call themselves the best now but they were the best at one point and for a long time and back then it was harder to be the best. You know, in the way that exams are said to get easier each year because standards keep rising.

        Hi HG

yes of course they were the best at one time and very intelligent people, and I have at least 5 examples from work. 4 men 1 woman.. But what you said is true in the past they got more or less to the top of their line but its nowadays not the top but they are comfortable with all the layers that came on top.
Normally Ns strive, and strive and strive and never stop. But I think this is also chamging as life becomes more and more difficult and stresfull. I think its now like get to the top of their standards.. At least many around here think like that.
Which makes sense because now a days the trend is to also enjoy life to the most whereas 20 or evem 10 years before it was not. Nowadays the quest to the top does not leave tou space to enjoy life to the most like before.

Well maybe so but I am very driven and focused in what I do and am successful. But I also care about and want others to be successful. I will share most of my secrets for my success but I know you won’t beat me because you won’t outwork me. My kids are also driven and I make sure I give them the opportunity and skills to be successful but they have to have a work ethic to get it. My daughter is very focused and competitive but caring as she is going into the chiropractic profession. I think you can be successful and not be a narc and I think a narc can waste their talents-my ex. One of my favorite quotes is ” winners never cheat and cheaters never win”. Their are instances where this is sometimes not the case but I also believe what goes around comes around!

Indeed there are those who get to the top too by dint of hard work and natural ability who are not of our kind. The path is smoother for our kind at times and many of our kind are hard-working too because we want to be and have to be the best. Your quote is one of those which is applicable to many people in order to motivate them but there is an elite to whom this need not apply as a consequence of the positions they hold and the circles they move in. The recent Panama Papers leak is testament to that. It is the troops on the ground, the people in the front line, the “ordinary joes” who have to abide by that quote, the shady and elevated elite do not, they continue to pull the strings and many of our number reside in that group.
