WNAAD – What the Hell Just Happened?
Today is World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day (“WNAAD”) and in tandem with this awareness day, I have selected a series of articles which go to the issue of awareness, in terms of your own but more importantly to those who have yet to find insight and understanding. It is through YOU that you can direct people to this insight and understanding through YOUR sharing of my work. You have the capacity to assist others to seize the power. NOW is your opportunity to capitalise on this day’s impact by sharing, disseminating and spreading awareness.
– One minute I was serving lunch and everyone was talking away, the next he flung the plate at the wall and called me a fucking selfish bitch –
– I only asked how his day was and he just turned around and walked back out; that was yesterday evening and I haven’t heard from him since –
– I mentioned I was going away with my friends for the weekend and before I know it he is accusing me of having an affair and telling me I have to cancel the trip and stay at home –
– All I said was that the blue shirt suited him better, he tore both of them in half and pushed me over –
– How did I end up looking like this; I said that maybe he had had enough to drink –
– I was sat watching television and she came in full of hell and laid into me, I had no idea what I was supposed to have done –
The overriding response to such scenarios and others is what the hell just happened? At the time these instances happen, the recipient of the behaviour does not know that they have become entangled with one of our kind. The recipient expects the other person to operate by their standards of behaviour, their own mature and reasonable responses and their own healthy reactions. Not only do they find that the response is anything but like how they would respond, they struggle to discern any logic in or reason in how we have behaved. Common reactions to such instances as the above along with asking what the hell just happened would include
– She blew it up out of all proportion –
– I don’t know what got in to him, there was nothing the matter –
– It was such an extreme reaction I am at a loss to understand why she did as she did –
– Everything was going really well and then wham; I’ve no idea what set that off-
Indeed, you would have no idea at all what is going on and why would you? At the time you did not know that you had become entangled with a narcissist and this is an entirely typical and standard response. Even when you ascertain, most likely sometime after the relationship has been brought to an end through a callous discard, that you had become involved with a narcissist, these eruptions, disruptions and volcanic responses still mystify and bewilder. In order to comprehend what on earth has just happened in such instances it is necessary to adopt the narcissist’s perspective. Despite the boldness, the grandiosity and the confidence, we are suspicious of the world. The world has treated us badly. It is a treacherous place which has sought, from the very beginning, to destroy us and this remains our mind set. As we move through life, climbing higher and higher, driving forward and conquering, we remain vigilant, wary and indeed often paranoid. There are those traitors, those betrayers and those plotters who would love nothing more than to do us down, dethrone us and topple us. Hence we often strike first before those who conspire to harm us can do so. Our view of the world means that we see criticism, which we despise and hate more than anything else, lurking around every corner, in the words of those who speak to us and most of all through the actions and gestures of the shadowy snakes who infest the world.
Oh we are not stupid, we know only too well that you prefer to criticise us through actions and gestures, that way you are able to diminish the impact by suggesting that we are over-reacting, reading too much into it and seeing things that are not there. Of course we often accuse you of doing this but we are never guilty of behaving in this manner. We are always right when we see a criticism arising from something. We are finely tuned to pick up on these criticisms and therefore we spot them straight away.
Notwithstanding our ability to spot these criticisms, we are unable to evade them and instead like a serrated dagger they wound us and make us feel weak, vulnerable and pathetic. They are an unwanted and horrendous reminder of the very thing we seek not to be. In order to cope with this unwarranted wounding of us, we have an excellent self-defence mechanism. Fury. Our fury is always there, churning away beneath the surface and when we are wounded by criticism, this fury ignites and manifests either as heated fury or cold fury. This means that we lash out at you and others, smash things up, assault people, stand and glare, dole out silent treatments and so forth. This will nearly always cause the recipient of this manifestation of ignited fury to respond in an emotional manner – fear, hurt, anger, surprise, annoyance, upset and so forth – which of course equates to fuel.
The provision of fuel as a direct consequence of the manifestation of this ignited fury means that the wound caused by the criticism is healed and eventually the ignited fury will dissipate as it has served its function. A Mid-Range narcissist has some control over the ignition of his fury and if he deems that exploding in a certain situation would be detrimental to how he is viewed he may switch to cold fury or even withdraw and seek fuel elsewhere to quell the ignited fury and heal the wound. A Greater Narcissist has substantial control and for instance if he deems it necessary to preserve the façade he will keep the fury under control until there is an appropriate moment to unleash the fury and gain the fuel. Thus in some instances the ‘what the hell moment’ may not happen at the time the criticism occurred but be a time afterwards. You can see now just how bewildering and disorientating it is.
Be aware that a criticism which is allied with emotion is fuel and will not wound us. Thus shouting at us and calling us all the names under the sun only provides us with fuel. Crying and telling us that we are a complete bastard and useless in bed is fuel. That is why the criticism often arises from perception and from actions and gestures as they tend to be fuel free.
Returning to the instances at the outset of this article, let’s examine how the perception of criticism manifested in my kind’s mind.
– One minute I was serving lunch and everyone was talking away, the next he flung the plate at the wall and called me a fucking selfish bitch –
The criticism arose because the narcissist was served with his food behind everybody else thus insinuating that other people were more important than him.
– I only asked how his day was and he just turned around and walked back out; that was yesterday evening and I haven’t heard from him since –
The criticism arose because the speaker failed to smile and look delighted at the return of the narcissist, thus implying that he was not worth shining for.
– I mentioned I was going away with my friends for the weekend and before I know it he is accusing me of having an affair and telling me I have to cancel the trip and stay at home –
The criticism was spending time with other people and therefore suggesting that the narcissist was not interesting enough to spend the weekend with.
– All I said was that the blue shirt suited him better, he tore both of them in half and pushed me over –
The criticism was to suggest that the shirt he preferred was not the one he looked best in. This not only criticised his choice but also how he looked.
– How did I end up looking like this; I said that maybe he had had enough to drink –
The criticism is to suggest that the narcissist has a drink problem and that his activities ought to be curtailed, by you, somebody who is inferior to him.
– I was sat watching television and she came in full of hell and laid into me, I had no idea what I was supposed to have done –
This may be an example of delayed fury arising from an earlier criticism and/or it might be the fact that the person was watching television and not providing attention to the narcissist.
You will have no doubt deduced from this that occurrence of a what the hell just happened moment can happen at any time, can come out of nowhere and is not based on anything significant, from your perspective. From our perspective there is the potential for criticism on a repeated and frequent basis. This is what leads to the second-guessing, hypervigilance, anxiety and treading on egg-shells that is so often associated with our kind.
In terms of dealing with it, it is nigh on impossible to predict. You will at least know what it is and why it has happened. In certain circumstances it can be used to your advantage to cause a wound and then not to provide fuel when the ignition of fury takes place. This will weaken us and cause us to go elsewhere, but care should be exercised in doing this as it may escalate the reaction initially with severe consequences. The most appropriate way to deal with this is to be able to know what it is, understand why it has happened, that it will blow over and that you may be best providing positive fuel, rather than becoming scared, bewildered or upset, since you know what is behind it. You can then manage it in that way until such time as you can escape the effect and influence of the narcissist as a whole.

Yes, Jenna. Many of them seemed to have a difficult time staying focused and did much rambling. I think we have become used to HGs very organized and focused style – more professorial, not stream-of-consciousness. And then if they were saying something we already had learned – and dragging it out with many false starts and non-sequitors – it could feel painfully slow. But I did learn some new things.

HG I’m currently discussing your site with a member from a fb narc abuse page. She’s had a look and she finds it interesting but she’s saying there are fundamental differences with her narc to what you have written. I suspect she’s generalizing (as she would) without understanding the different schools and cadres. I’ve briefly explained but it would be helpful if I could direct her to the best relevant article here that explains the different schools and cadres. Which would you recommend was the best to read for someone new to the idea of schools and cadres?

Hey everyone, I originally posted this under Danger, but then got to thinking a lot of you might not see it and maybe you’d experienced a similar problem.
Hey HG, Danger seemed the right place to say this. Yesterday I was on the WNAAD page and my phone began to get virus pop up notifications. Now whenever I am here on WordPress one will pop up and shunt me off your page. I have a fairly new iPhone and have never had this problem before. Don’t know if any of the other commenters have experienced this. It has me spooked. My phone is integral to my life. Going to try staying away for awhile and see if it ever happens on another site. Hope I will be able to
Glad you mentioned this Windstorm although not the same exact problems, I’ve had many odd things happening with my phone since joining and posting on your site HG. One of the main reasons I didn’t sign up to hear your interviews was because I’m concerned of viruses leeching onto my phone.
I’ve also been staying away / not posting but saw this comment and felt need to pipe up.

I have formed a hypothesis about this virus problem. I believe it is tied to Safari. Once I erased all my search history, I found I could go to narcsite by google and have no problems liking or responding to comments. Likewise I can read any emails about posts or comments with no problem. The problem seems to happen when I try to respond/like a comment from the email. It automatically opens Safari to do this and then I have the pop up issue and get shunted off the site.
It is a real pill to have to leave the email, google the site, search the article and hunt thru the comments for the correct one to respond to. Also there often is not a reply tab.
If anyone finds a better solution – please share it!

I have the s8 and just updated it so i dont think thats the issue. Posdibly google related. Its a pain but at least km able to get rid of it.

Ive had this tooband its hard to get rid of the casino page or whatever pops up. I noticed if i shut my phone but not the page these virus type pages come up. I clear my cache on my phone and it seems to help but i had wondered too if viruses are getting thru on wordpress. I hope they are aware of it.

Hello! One of my google account names is Snow White and Word Press would not let me use K, so I worked around it by choosing theletterafterj. I think there is a Snow White that has posted here previously, but I have posted under K on HG’s site since signing on in April. I, too, have noticed that the original SW hasn’t posted lately. I know other narcissists who do this. Often, if they have good memories, they keep a very organized mental dossier on everyone. Some actually keep books. I know one prominent attorney who carries an “enemies” book around with her. Freaks out the other attorneys!

Hi PD, I understand that a link to my interview will be e-mailed to those who have signed up, at some point during the week. I was interviewed at 7pm GMT last night and I had stated in the initial ‘flyer’ for WNAAD that my interview would not be available straight away as I was last to be interviewed (scheduling issues). I had thought that all of the interviews would be there for people to pick and choose from some time last night/today, but I understand that you receive an e-mail link to the various interviews on a daily basis, so mine will be sent out at some point, but I do not know when. I was unaware there was a livestream scheduled to take place. I know that it wasn’t just my readers who thought the interviews would go out live, there has been some confusion across the board, but it should make sense now.
HG may I ask….how did you really feel when you found out your interview hadn’t been broadcast?
You held yourself together here so well, a sure sign of the greater you are but I was sat observing the comments and your responses and thinking ‘wow really he must be livid’ I would’ve been pissed off if it were me and I’m not a narc so to you you must have been furious?!
Also if my analysis was right, did the comments here of angry listeners on your behalf go any way to restoring the fuel for you?

I actually had understood initially that it would not be broadcast live and would be available some time after the interview took place. However, when I was being interviewed at the start, I was then given the impression that it was live. So when people stated later they had not heard me there was a flash of fury but I kept it under control as I sought to understand what had happened. One of my kind readers explained what had gone on after the confusion had arisen (and people commenting here) so it all then made sense. I was well-fuelled anyway as I had been out for dinner with numerous friends beforehand so that brief flash of fury was not from a significant wound.
I had a bit of empath rage when the broadcast was over, but I held it together, too. It was nice to see so many from the blog posting live comments. Everyone was a riot! However, the organizers were remiss in not streaming your interview because you are a principal player in this dynamic. Your blog is The Rosetta Stone of the Narcissistic language, even though the demotic text is amorphous, it is literally THE key to understanding your kind. Many of us looked elsewhere, extensively, for answers and we couldn’t find them until we discovered you. Thank you!

I had the same observation. I didn’t realize he didn’t air live because I knew I’d be running around with my daughter after work and would have to wait for the podcast to come out. But if I had carved time to wait it out and watch and listen live I would have been equally upset as all of you. It is infuriating. I’m sure they could track who registered through the link invite by which guest speaker and surely HG brought in lots of people. I can only imagine if HG thought an audience was listening including some of his blog fans and then it was only the two interviewing him…holy f*cking sh*t balls…

I found it interesting in what the others had to say, some of it bored me, yet that was due to presentation or the tones in their voices made me tune them out to a point. Yet hearing their perspective was interesting and what they have learned.
Going to the source thou is where I believe makes a big difference and was sadden not to have heard your interview HG, more so because I believe yours is delivered in such a unique way and people need to hear it from one such as you and not survivors or other victims. Our stories are just to similar and sympathy sugar coats our senses, which in turn understanding may be there but the I really don’t care about you this is the truth of the matter doesn’t coat our senses, just blunt truth of the matter.
People should have heard you, yet patience is a virtue and has shown to be more profitable (not always in monetary) in the long run. And being not only your name was dropped in the comments, more then a few times, so was the web address here, will cause curiosity on top of not being heard.

He’s RG sooo close, but no cigar. Couldn’t hold a candle to you HG.

Not me. I find all kinds of things interesting/informative. I found RG hit and miss. Boring often, but entertaining sometimes. I thought his talk about covert word salad was very informative and entertaining.
I appreciate professionalism, but people have different styles. He reminded me somewhat of Jeff Corwin (somewhat zany and wild herpetologist who does a Saturday morning program for kids). Regardless of his style, his information seemed accurate to me.

I wanted them to know it wasn’t a slight against HG and we will all still get to hear his interview. It should have been better explained to all, that HGs interview was recorded to be heard later….not during live broadcast.
I tuned in to hear HG specifically too, ☺️and I listened for the whole live broadcast as well, waiting for HG. Instead of feeling angry or jipped. I embraced the purpose of the summit. To help people, like those of us who have suffered from narc abuse…to understand and heal from that abuse. Like HG helps us all. So, I do get it.

As a Brit who speaks the Queen’s English with received pronunciation, I shall apply my mind to this in order to garner some character traits for use when I am next in SoCali (or Southern California as I believe it to be).
“Bail” – leave, drop out
“Bounce” – depart, perhaps with vigour
“butthurt” – upset but with no good reason
buttcall” – a hoover , a deliberate call which is then passed off as accidental OR by a non-narc an accidental call
“bomb” – fail
“cruise” – look around whilst moving in a particular direction
“drag” – tedious
“heavy” – intense
“mob” – overwhelm
“boss” HG Tudor
“crossfaded” I understand this in a music sense but guess this is eomthing to do with surfing
“dub” – clumsy or awkward
“gnarley” – total perfection an equivalent would be “Skills on toast”
“heads” no idea
“poppin” – happening as in what is happening
“psyched” – up for it
“pumped” – also up for it
-“sketchy” – weak, insipid

Lol. You speak my language. Bail/bounce: to leave. Butthurt: sulk. Butt call: dialing your phone when in your back pocket. Bomb: awesome. Cruise: flow/ride. Drag: either boring or taking a drag of a 🚬. Boss: a person that runs it/ they are on top/ they own it. Poppin: hype/active/on – the club is poppin. Use it in a sentence:
I got my stunna shades on, the club is poppin. Your girl is a trip. She bounced soon as she saw me, butthurt cause I’m the bomb. She wish she could be the boss, like me.

The impossibility of predicting what will happen next is what causes one to be on high alert and have continuous anxiety.
The confusion…Oh the confusion! I called them WTF moments. There were many of them over the course of every single day. I swear if I hadn’t have found my way here it would have been the confusion that did for me one way or another. Either within the relationship or post escape. The confusion, the not understanding…it’s a killer for me. BUT that very same trait is also what saved me. If I hadn’t have had that incessant need to understand I wouldn’t have delved and delved until I eventually ended up here.
My only problem is that (I’m guessing) we all end up here when it’s too late and the damage is done either post escape or post discard. We need prevention!
