I’m in the thick of reading a biography about Marlene Dietrich, written by her daughter but refreshingly not a shrieking ‘Mommie Dearest’ type of book. More matter-of-fact and the woman, while she obviously had no idea what a narcissist truly is, relays many, many instances I recognise from HG’s writings and makes clear to anyone familiar with his work, that Dietrich was most definitely a Narcissist. My secong (and I hope more accurate guess) Upper Mid-range Somatic.

There is a quote, however, from one of her cast-off’s, (Erich Remarque…definitely on the shelf) to her daughter who, in trying to comfort him, tells him she doesn’t love her mother.

He replies: “She loves you as she perceives. But her rpm’s are a thousand a minute, whereas ours are a normal hundred a minute. We need an hour to love her, she loves us as well in six minutes and is onto everything else she must do, while we are wondering why she isn’t loving us as we are loving her. We are mistaken. She already has.”

For this man to have said something so near to the truth, I thought very interesting, especially for 1939 when the idea of what Narcissism really is had not even been touched upon. That would take over 70 years. That, would take you, HG.

Thank you for sharing this interesting observation. It is fascinating to read about “near hits” where people have made observations which are far closer to the accuracy than they realised at the time.
