Speaking of ‘manipulated’, Trump’s very controversial plan to take over the Gaza strip and relocate the Palestinians who live there is exactly what he did in the 1980s as an underhanded property developing landlord.
Back in 1981, he bought a low-rent 14-story building on prime New York real estate facing Central Park. His plan was to tear down the building and replace it with luxury condos. The problem was that there were already a group of established rent-stabilised tenants living in the building.
For the next five years, Trump fought tenants, lawyers, city officials and New York state regulators in order to get his way.
The lawsuits from that time describe the ruthless actions Trump took to force out the tenants. The lawsuits describe that Trump cut off hot water and heat during the freezing New York winters. He imposed new and onerous rules. One tenant claimed that Trump initiated a rat infestation of the building. Trump served bogus lawsuits against tenants. In one case, he accused a long-standing tenant of not paying rent even though the tenant actually did pay rent. Accounts from that time describe him as nasty, rude and insensitive.
Trump is eyeing the Gaza strip now in the same way. He wants to rebuild the land as a Mediterranean resort that will be owned by the US. He is a grubby, corrupt property developer at heart.
