I found it impossible to watch this charade of a trial. In fact, I found the mere thought of this man being able to question witnesses at his trial traumatic. One part of me feels that should never be allowed to happen in a case with circumstances as extreme as these. Another part recognises his Constitutional right to represent himself. Distasteful doesn’t go far enough in describing the circus he helped to create, disgusting might be getting a little closer, despicable probably gets me there.
It’s taken me time, and the guilty verdict, to be able to share my thoughts.
In the circumstances, I recognise that I could not care less that he’s a narcissist. That’s being honest. He deliberately ran a truck into a parade of innocent people, killing six of them and injuring over ten times more. For the families of those killed, and for the injured, their lives will never be the same.
The ultimate insult came at the end of the trial when he closed his ‘defence’ with a reference to his evil act being “God’s will.” That was the ultimate act of the narcissist. Blaming God for something he did, using some manufactured belief in the Almighty to cement a claim to innocence. The blame shifting of the narcissist has taken on new meaning with this man and with the case. Who else would have the audacity make such a claim? It was an act of Darryl Brookes will that took the lives of those people. He has no remorse, no regret, and no chance of redemption.
Justice in the afterlife will not be pleasant for him. I trust the rest of this life will not be pleasant for him either.
